Caribbean Portraits (1998 - 2007)

RASTA & BALDHEAD KING'S TOWN MURAL 1998The first time I met King Yelo and his family-friends they asked me to draw portraits.  When I showed up in King's Town they had this huge piece of plywood maybe 8 ft wide and 4 ft tall.  Everyone was shy to sit for me until after the first one -- and then there was a line all day long . . .and fighting between the rastas and baldheads.  In the end I painted everyone and spent morning to night, ten portraits in all.  King Yelo now tells me, fifteen years later, that I don't have it in me anymore to paint like that.  One day soon I'm going to prove him wrong.  King's Town, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos.  GIFT TO KING YELO

WELCOME TO KING'S TOWN 2003, over the years King's Town started to change as every place does.  The first mural I painted began to fade just as the presence of Rasta in that neighborhood.  King Yelo had always been the enforcer of rules, such as no cussin' and fightin' and my favorite, Herb smokin' only.  I wanted to paint something that would remind everyone of the real roots of King's Town.  The photo is of Keino and I in Blue Hills where I lived with my brother on the beach.  GIFT TO KING YELO
